Walking into an OB/GYN office for the first time can feel intimidating and you’re not alone if you’ve been putting it off. Whether you’re a young woman scheduling your very first exam, someone new to the area looking for a provider, or a patient who simply let a few years slip by, making that appointment is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health. At A Woman’s Place in Naples, FL, we believe that informed patients are empowered patients. So let’s talk about what actually happens at your first visit and why there’s no better time than now to book it.
“Wait time was at a minimum, all staff were very kind.”

What Happens During Your First Visit?
Your first OB/GYN appointment is primarily a getting-to-know-you visit. Our providers will review your personal and family medical history, ask about your menstrual cycle, any symptoms you’ve been experiencing, and your overall health goals. Depending on your age and history, the appointment may include a physical exam, a pelvic exam, and a Pap smear; a simple screening test that checks for abnormal cervical cells and helps detect early signs of cervical cancer.
You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss contraception options, sexual health, fertility concerns, or any other questions you may have. No topic is off-limits. Our team is here to listen, not judge and we’ve heard it all.
When Should You Start Seeing an OB/GYN?
Most medical guidelines recommend that women begin OB/GYN visits between the ages of 13 and 15; however, at A Woman’s Place, we welcome patients starting at age 18, as local pediatricians provide routine care through adolescence. These early visits are often less about examinations and more about building a relationship with a provider and getting educated about your changing body. Annual well-woman exams are recommended throughout adulthood, and the frequency of Pap smears varies by age and health history.
If you’ve skipped a year (or several), don’t let embarrassment stop you from coming back in. Our providers are compassionate, experienced, and focused entirely on your wellbeing; not on making you feel guilty for the gap.
Why Preventive Care Matters More Than You Think
Routine OB/GYN care is about far more than reproductive health. Your annual exam gives your provider a complete picture of your overall wellness including blood pressure, weight trends, and risk factors for conditions like osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease. We offer screenings like 3D mammograms and DEXA bone density testing right here in our office, making it easy to stay on top of your health without bouncing between multiple locations.
Many serious conditions including cervical cancer, ovarian cysts, and hormone imbalances, often have few or no symptoms in their early stages. The best way to catch them early is through regular, proactive care.
“I really like my doctor….Dr Miller.”
